Every year, the Maui-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit spearheads the Ebb & Flow Arts Show in an effort to foster and promote multicultural and multidisciplinary education, contemporary music and art on the island. This year’s show will be held on March 3rd at 3 p.m. at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center and will feature Ignace Jang on the violin, Sun Chan Chang on the 'cello; and Maui-based artist Robert Pollock on the piano. Jang is the concertmaster of the Hawaii Symphony and teaches at the University of Hawaii in Manoa.
This year’s program is centered around a partnership with South Korea and one that includes a musical cultural exchange. Recently, Dr. Shinhee Park, president of Veritas Musicae in Seoul, invited American composers Sarn Oliver, Peter Swanzy, William Anderson, and Robert Pollock to create short piano pieces based on Korean poetry for performances in Korea and on Maui. In exchange, The Ebb & Flow Arts Show commissioned Dr. Park to compose a trio for violin, 'cello, and piano.
During the evenings events you can expect to hear Eugene Lee's "Etude #5" for piano; Sun Young Park's "Heem" for violin, 'cello, and piano; and world-renowned Isang Yun's "Konigliches Thema" for solo violin and other works on the program including Maurice Ravel's "Sonata" for violin and 'cello; and "Epigrams" for violin, 'cello, and piano.
The evening will also include film features such as a video by Peter Swanzy to accompany his piano composition Stars that is inspired by a Korean poem. There will be a preview of Emmy Award-winning Tom Vendetti's most recent trek to Tibet, with footage of a previous interview with the Dalai Lama on the topics of China, the significance of Mount Kailash, and happiness. And to top it all off, there will be aromatic fresh flowers in the theater during the second part of the program!
