Of all the restaurants in Hawaii, only one made it to this year’s OpenTable list of America’s best restaurants, and that was Maui’s very own Mama’s Fish House over on the North Shore in Paia. Most residents will agree that whether you’re visiting or living on Maui, you don’t want to miss out on the experience of Mama’s Fish House, especially if you enjoy the best in seafood, along with some fun, original mixed drinks.
It looks like OpenTable users agree, having voted the restaurant onto the list of just 100 of the best restaurants in America. If you’re unfamiliar with OpenTable, it’s an online reservation company that you can use to help ensure that you get seated at the time and place you want, or if it happens to be booked up, you can easily find suitable alternatives.
Only 30 states managed to get restaurants on the list, plus the District of Columbia. Some of the obvious states claimed the largest share of winners, such as New York with 13, California with 12 and Virginia with seven. A common thread among the winners was sustainable practices, along with seasonal and house-made ingredients. The list was also characterized by fine dining and casual but elegant dining establishments.
Mama’s certainly fits the profile, but what may set it apart from many other winners is the fact that the ambiance is every bit as enjoyable as the food. Perched right over its own scenic little beach on a beautiful North Shore property, the restaurant is open to the balmy ocean breezes and features an elegant Polynesian design worthy of Maui’s rich cultural heritage.
To add to its list of accolades, Mama’s earned second place on OpenTable’s most popular U.S. restaurants in 2015. This is especially impressive because Mama’s is one of over 24,000 restaurants that were evaluated by OpenTable users between November 1st of 2015 and October 31st of 2016.
Despite the challenge of earning such prestigious recognition, the results aren’t terribly surprising. After all, Maui may be the most iconic vacation destination in the United States, and Mama’s is widely considered to be the island’s best restaurant.
