One of the first things you should know about moving to Maui is that we have a big support network for the disadvantaged and the suffering. A huge number of community members are involved in various causes so we can keep working to make Maui the best place in the world to live. On that note, some interesting news recently came down the pipeline from the United States Veterans Initiative.
Hawaii has been awarded over $1 million from the Department of Veterans Affairs for homeless prevention and housing, which will aid 360 veterans and their families throughout Maui, Kauai and the Big Island. Reintegrating with society is notoriously difficult for many veterans, particularly those who have seen active combat and are suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. These individuals have gone above and beyond expectations for doing their part to take care of their country, and it’s important that their country take care of them in return, and help them to stabilize their lives both financially and emotionally.
The funds will go to the U.S. Vets support service for families via Legal Aid Services of Hawaii and the Family Life Center of Maui, along with facilities on Kauai and the Big Island. This will help keep at-risk veterans from losing their homes, and help get homeless veterans into permanent housing. These facilities offer short-term assistance with things like rent payments, utility payments, security deposits, as well as moving and emergency costs.
On top of the $1 million, a $300,000 grant has also been awarded by the Department of Labor to provide employment services to female veterans. This grant will help the U.S. Vets program at Barbers Point on Oahu to expand their employment services to families on Maui, Kauai and the Big Island. Their goal is to enroll 120 veteran families and place 84 veterans in jobs. They will assist with job placement, on-the-job and classroom training, career counseling, life skills and money management mentoring for homeless female veterans and their families.
